Inside the World of Covert Operations and Deep Cover Missions

In this episode of Wake Up with Miya, I sit down with Robert “Tosh” Plumlee and bestselling author Ralph Pezzullo to discuss their book Deep Cover, Shallow Graves. Together, they share the remarkable story behind the project and the years of research that went into documenting Tosh’s extraordinary life.

Tosh describes his experiences as a contract pilot involved in covert operations during the Cold War, offering his perspective on intelligence work, compartmentalized operations, and historical events that continue to generate discussion decades later. Ralph explains the extensive investigation required to verify accounts, gather supporting evidence, and preserve stories that might otherwise have been lost.

The JFK Era, Intelligence Operations, and Historical Investigation

Our conversation covers topics including President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, Cuba, Iran-Contra, intelligence networks, and the challenges of separating documented history from speculation. Tosh shares his recollections of events he says he witnessed, while Ralph discusses the responsibility of carefully researching complex historical subjects.

We also explore the personal cost of living a life surrounded by secrecy. Maintaining confidentiality, operating within compartmentalized systems, and carrying decades of untold experiences can leave lasting effects long after the missions have ended. Tosh reflects on those challenges and why he eventually decided to tell his story.

One of the most unexpected moments happened during the final minutes of our interview. A power outage knocked me offline here in Hawaii, leaving Tosh and Ralph talking together while the recording continued. After I rejoined, Ralph mentioned that Tosh had received a text message stating, “Tosh, you better shut up.” At the time, I assumed they were joking. It wasn’t until editing the interview that I realized the message had actually been discussed while I was disconnected. We finished the interview laughing that perhaps it was simply “one more conspiracy.”

History, Secrecy, and the Stories That Endure

My conversation with Tosh Plumlee and Ralph Pezzullo is a reminder that history is often more complicated than it first appears. Whether discussing covert operations, intelligence work, or events that continue to spark debate decades later, it’s important to examine evidence, ask thoughtful questions, and remain open to continued research.
